Biotin is Essential to the Health of Your Hair, Skin and Nails
Biotin is a member of the water soluble B-complex family of vitamins, normally only required in small amounts. Biotin is used as a cofactor of enzymes involved in fatty acid metabolism, gluconeogenesis, and amino acid catabolism, and is essential in maintaining metabolic homeostasis. Biotin plays a vital role in metabolic functioning as a coenzyme carrier of activated carbon dioxide in the TCA cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle). In its coenzyme form, biotin synthesizes glucose from non-carbohydrate sources, and synthesizes and breaks down certain fatty acids and amino acids.
Low biotin levels have been linked to many skin conditions. Signs of deficiency include dry skin, fungal infections, depression, generalized aches and pain, nausea and vomiting. Taking a biotin supplement has shown to prevent hair loss, premature graying, cradle cap, and brittle nails.
